Lighter Footprint | Vancouver has a
one-planet footprint
2020 Target
More consideration is needed in order to determine a measurable target.
Today
If everyone on earth lived as Vancouverites do now, we'd need four planets to sustain us. Despite a number of achievements, we still have an excessive ecological footprint. This goal encompasses all areas we are tackling through the Greenest City initiative.
If we succeed in reducing our waste and fossil fuel use, make our buildings better, eat local food, and build a green economy, our footprint will shrink.
Challenges
Cities control only about 40 per cent of the factors that affect their ecological footprint. As Canadian citizens we all share the impact from broad services such as health care, the national transportation network, and our education system. Ultimately, one of the biggest drivers of our collective footprint is our individual decisions about what and how we consume; our buying and eating habits.
Your Ideas
How can Vancouver reduce its footprint? Most of the ideas that come from the dialogue in each of the other areas will help achieve this goal. But we still need to go further and look at changing how we view and use resources and the environmental impact of the individual decisions we make each day. How would you reduce your ecological footprint?
