Green Transportation | Walking, cycling
and transit are the preferred transportation options

2020 Target

Make the majority of trips on foot, bicycle, and public transit and reduce distance driven per resident.

Today

Green Transportation
Vancouver's integrated approach to transportation and land use is a key ingredient to our success as one of the world's most livable cities. We focus on moving people rather than cars, with new bicycle networks, easier access to transit, friendlier pedestrian environments and higher density neighbourhoods that favour sustainable public transportation.

Transportation is a large source of greenhouse gas emissions and to make the peak oil transition our city needs to rely less on fossil fuels. Cleaner vehicles can help, but are only part of a larger approach that focuses on reducing the need to travel and making alternatives to driving more attractive.

Challenges

Green Transportation

Transit improvements are essential to meet our goal, but require provincial and federal support since the city doesn't own or operate the transit system. Other strategies – such as congestion pricing and pay-as-you-drive insurance – also require support from higher levels of government.

Limited data availability and reliability make it difficult to set the right targets and track progress. Improved data collection and monitoring are a big part of the task ahead.

Your Ideas

How can Vancouver remain a leader in green transportation? We can build complete communities that put people close to jobs, schools, shopping, recreation, and transit. We can advance policies and programs that prioritize walking, cycling and transit, while discouraging driving. We can design our public realm to make sustainable transportation safe, easy and fun. We can accelerate the shift to low-carbon vehicles and support options such as car-sharing.

The possibilities are endless – and we want to hear from you. What are your ideas for making walking, cycling and transit the preferred ways of getting around?
